It’s hard to believe that June is already upon us! For those of us in Arizona, this is a bittersweet time of year. Those in the high-country are beginning to enjoy warmer weather and those of us in the Valley of the Sun are preparing for the mercury to be on the rise for the next few months. While plenty of things are synonymous with this time of year, here at Picazzo’s Organic Italian Kitchen we are always excited to celebrate National Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Month.
As temperatures continue to rise, local farmers are harvesting beautiful, fresh, delicious and nutritious fruits and veggies. What better time to celebrate the flavors and nutritional benefits of fresh produce than right now? The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), along with many other nutrition thought leaders, take this opportunity annually to educate consumers about the importance of maintaining a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. In honor of this year’s celebration, we thought this was a great opportunity to share some fun facts and figures.
Fresh Fruits & Vegetables: the Facts
• Arizona is listed among the top U.S. producers of oranges, lettuce, grapefruit and watermelon.
• A diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables can reduce your risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure and even prevent certain types of cancer.
• According to the Harvard-based Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study, participants who ate an average of 8+ servings of fruits and vegetables a day were 30% less likely to suffer a stroke or a heart attack.
• According to the latest dietary guidelines from the USDA, you should eat 5 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, depending on your caloric intake.
